In 2014 architect Michael Rayner AM generously donated 90 artworks to The University of Queensland. This major gift comprises works by 33 artists, many of whom have made a substantial contribution to the visual arts in Australia. 

Highlights include Kevin Connor’s painting Figure in an interior 1971; three silver gelatin photographs by Max Dupain, Salvadorium Dalii 1982, Waratahs and the moon 1983, and Little Reef – pre dawn, Newport 1983; Denise Green’s Duane Triangle 1988; Robert Jacks’s watercolour Woman walking with Cello 1998; Colin Lanceley’s large-scale drawing Winter vineyard 1979; Paul Partos’s painting On the inside 1998, and a group of 16 drawings, collages, prints and mixed media works on paper by Madonna Staunton, ranging in date from 1976 to 2010. 

Other more recent works include photographic works by Marian Drew Three light forms 1999 and Waterline [1–3] 2004; Samantha Hobson’s painting Old men met 2008; Daniel Templeman’s sculpture Destroyed by fiction 2003; Judy Watson’s painting swallowing tears 2004; two mixed media works by Gordon Bennett (AKA John Citizen), Interior 1 and Interior 3, both 2002; and a group of 19 artworks by Sandra Selig, comprising paintings, collages and 14 ‘spider web’ works from the series ‘untitled’ and ‘universes’, both 2007. 

Michael Rayner’s donation enriches existing holdings in The University of Queensland Art Collection. Artists not previously represented who feature in Rayner’s donation include Rosie Miller, Robert Moore, Robert J Morris, Bruce Petty, and Daniel Templeman.
