Our public programs and education aim to stimulate debate and dialogue on new thinking and ideas in visual art, encourage participation by diverse audiences, and enhance the campus experience of UQ students.
Exhibitions are supported by a suite of public programs, events and interpretive tools, which are designed to engage a wide range of audiences including UQ staff and students, UQ alumni, high schools, and external community groups.
Public Programs and events include regular floor talks by curators and artists linked to current exhibitions, panel discussions and guided tours. They are held during the week, after hours on selected Wednesday evenings, and at weekends. During university semesters, programs that support the teaching and learning activities of students enrolled in courses at UQ, and other tertiary institutions, are available.
Public lectures and symposia, which explore critical developments and new scholarship in visual culture and ideas by leading academics and industry professionals are held in association with the exhibition program, and/or with partners throughout the year. View Public Lecture Series here
Interpretive Learning Resources
Interpretive resources are available for a number of current and past exhibitions, including print and online Interpretive Guides, podcasts and videos of interviews with artists and curators, virtual exhibition tools and masterclasses.
These free resources can be used to enhance interpretation and understanding of the exhibitions prior to, during, or following a visit to UQ Art Museum, or as part of independent senior secondary classroom activities.
The information and activities in the UQ Art Museum Interpretive Guides are intended to support the inquiry learning model of the Queensland Visual Art senior curriculum and align with the general objectives of making and appraising. The Guides provides opportunities for Year 11 and 12 senior students to:
- extend their knowledge and experience of contemporary visual arts practice and career paths;
- develop their capacity to research, develop, resolve and reflect on their own and others’ art works in the specific context of audiences and purposes; and
- explore how the visual arts reinforce and challenge their own individual experiences.
School visits
Supervised school groups are welcome to visit the UQ Art Museum, with advance bookings required. Introductory talks on exhibitions can be organised by prior arrangement, and with at least one week’s notice. There is no charge.
School groups should include one supervising teacher for each group of 10 students, with up to a maximum of 40 school students in the group.
Self-guided tours are welcome, but should be booked ahead to avoid overcrowding and clashes with other events in the UQ Art Museum.
Queensland Art Teachers Association
In partnership with Queensland Art Teachers Association (QATA), UQ Art Museum runs regular professional development seminars for senior high school visual art teachers, which include discussions with curators and exhibiting artists.
In association with QATA, the first masterclass for senior high students was held in May 2009 with artist Ben Quilty. These structured two hour workshops enabled participants to interact with Ben Quilty, gain insight into his practice, learn about approaches to contemporary curatorship and the development of the exhibition Ben Quilty Live! 8 May – 19 July.
The 2011 masterclass will be held in association with the exhibition Space invaders: Australian street. posters. paste-ups. zines. stickers. More information available here.
