The University of Queensland Art Collection includes around 4,000 works of art and is one of the most significant public art collections in Queensland. 

With a history of some six decades of collection development, the University’s Collection comprises works by major Australian artists from the colonial period to the present, as well as a significant collection of Chinese antiquities. In 2004, the University initiated the National Collection of Self Portraits, an important focus area within the Collection.

New acquisitions for the Collection, across a range of media, are actively pursued by UQ Art Museum and UQ Art Museum Board. In accordance with the Art Collection Development Policy 2009–2013, the University continues a legacy of acquiring innovative works of art that respond to the contemporary moment. Historic works of art enter the Collection primarily through gifts (including gifts under the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program), donations and bequests.

Major gifts, donations and bequests have included the Miya Studio Archive gifted by Pamela Crawford (née Seeman) (1988); the Nat Yuen Collection of Chinese Antiquities (1995, 2005, 2006); the Malcolm Enright Collection (1999); and the Graeme Bennett Collection (2000).

The UQ Art Museum is also the custodian of the Stuartholme-Behan Collection of Australian Art (1976), initially developed by Dr Norman Behan and gifted to the Stuartholme School.

Since 2004, the Collection has been housed and displayed in the James and Mary Emelia Mayne Centre on the University’s St Lucia campus, a state of the art building. Works from the Collection feature in exhibitions at the UQ Art Museum, which provide opportunities for research, critical discourse and debate.

Members of the University community also accesses the Collection through the 'On-Campus Art Program’, curated by the UQ Art Museum and displayed in buildings over the University's campuses.

Collection artworks are frequently loaned to exhibitions presented by other public institutions, thereby reaching state and national audiences.
